The community Sarnia Language Exchange started from something very personal. When I arrived in Canada, I realized a few things at the same time: I needed to improve my English, I wanted to understand the culture (which is very different from my home country), and most importantly, I wanted to break the fear of speaking in public. That feeling of being nervous, of doubting yourself… I knew I had to face it.
With that in mind, I decided to create this space. At the beginning it was something small, but over time it became something much bigger. Every meeting has some preparation behind it: I think about activities, topics, and ways to make people feel comfortable. We always start with something simple to break the ice, because I know how hard it is to arrive somewhere new, not know anyone, and also speak in another language.
The idea was never to make this feel like a class. It’s more like a relaxed space where people can practice, make mistakes without fear, laugh, and learn in a natural way. There are people from different countries, with different stories, and that makes every conversation interesting.
But beyond the language, there is something even more important: community. When you arrive in a new country, it’s easy to feel alone. This group is also about connecting, meeting people, and feeling that you are not going through this alone.
I’ve seen people who were very shy at the beginning, and now they speak with more confidence. I’ve seen friendships grow, people supporting each other, and that is what motivates me to keep going.
In the end, Sarnia Language Exchange is not only about practicing English or Spanish. It started from a personal need, but now it belongs to everyone who is part of it. It’s a place to grow, to lose fear, and to build something together.
